Wren

Are you ready for an eyeball plucking, ear biting, face pealing good time? Then I have just the thing for you. Brain Damage Films comes through with Zombie Chronicles, a look at the difference between laying down dead and up and running around dead.

Tara Woodley is a reporter on a quest to find out if the ghost stories of Scopesboro are fact or fiction. She finds herself lost in the desert and her maps seem to be of no help. She comes across Ebenezer Jackson (if you want to call coming across and hitting with your car the same thing) and offers to trade him a ride into Scopesboro for some information on the ghost stories she's seeking.

Ebenezer is a good old boy, a real nice guy. He has a thousand nicknames all picked out for our good friend Tara and is blessed with the gift of gab. He suggests they pull off at an abandoned house to take a rest from the road. It seems like the perfect time to tell a few tales.

In our first story, Sergeant Draper and his wife find themselves broken down on the side of the road. The Sergeant's wife is soon kidnapped and tied to a tree with explosives. An unknown assailant then maliciously tortures Sergeant Draper, as it turns out or good Sergeant is not really a nice guy after all. In fact, the word prick came to my mind more than once. It seems this story is a simple case of what goes around, comes around.

Next up we find three friends in search of a secret campground. They get turned around in the woods and end up in (come on, you know where they end up) an old abandoned graveyard. It seems this area has a nasty past and some very interesting legends. As it turns out friends, you probably shouldn't piss on a dead outlaws grave. They don't seem to like it very much.

Meanwhile, Tara and Ebenezer are good and rested. Now that they've had a break, they're ready to move on, but I don't think Ebenezer's tales impresses our reporter friend. Maybe there's some way to convince her that some stories have a life all of their own.

I felt this movie was really enjoyable. It had a great Tales From the Crypt kind of feel to it. It was nowhere near as campy but it had that campfire story feel. It was a little predictable but honestly most horror is these days. There is a definite love for the genre here, you can tell that the people involved really enjoy horror.

There was also a good amount of time put in on the make up effects. I love to see latex appliances used, there's a totally different type of artistry involved with this type of effect. I do enjoy digital effects from time to time but make up done by hand will always be my favorite. It takes time, patience, and a little bit of skill that really goes a long way. Don't get me wrong, the make up effects were simple in this movie but that's part of the charm. You don't need to go overboard to have a really nice creepy effect.

The stories here were really simple, it was your basic, back from the dead, zombie movie. There were times when the scenes stretched out a little to long for my taste but other than that I felt it was well executed. I did like that there were times when the zombies moved really slowly and even though the victims were running they still got caught. It was something I remembered from the old black and white horror flicks. No matter how fast you managed to run, the monsters still caught you. That was what made the movies so scary to me.

Most of the film was shot outside and in the daylight, some people are very picky in this area. They feel monsters lurk at night, by the light of a full moon. In my opinion I'd rather see a movie made in the daylight and done well, then shot in the dark, with poor lighting. I'd rather be able to see what so many people put their time and effort into.

So, if all this sounds like fun to you, check it out. I had a great time with this one, it was a great way to spend an evening.
