Sexy witches, Bible thumping nerdlingers, over acting priests and hours of magical spinning, It's all in a day's work in the world of The Coven. On the surface, The Coven would appear to be cashing in on the likes of The Craft or more recently WB's Charmed (yeah, you're not that far off for thinking that either). Featuring 4 of the sexiest SOV Wicca loving witches you've probably seen this side of Willow Rosenberg, a fair amount of skin and a few moments of requisite gore. The Coven certainly makes for an interesting view, just don't expect a new outlook on life or an earth shattering epiphany after viewing and you'll probably survive everything A OK.
Off at college sexy Autumn (Tanya Dempsey of Tempe's Hell Asylum) is having a hard time fitting in. See Autumn is a witch and she misses the bond she had with her own little coven back home. Autumn passes the time talking to the spirit of her youthful grandmother (they could be sisters) and hitting on a local college boy. Of course Autumn isn't the only witch at the local community college. Vallie (Brittany James) senses the witchery within Autumn and approaches her to form their own little Coven along with two other local broom riders, Spencer and Kelly. Their motive for forming the coven is simple. Teach the local bible thumpers a lesson or two. You see, our friends the witches are tired of being tormented for their love of Wicca and figure it's time to do something about it. At one point Vallie is even stripped down by our god loving neighbors and nearly burned at the stake! Well, a tree actually but you get the point. Vallie has taken all she can stands and she can't stands no more!
Our four sexy lady friends eventually form their little coven and the spells and mischief soon begins. Things start out innocent enough, using their magic as more of a nuisance than anything else. However, things quickly turn oh so evil when Vallie's true colors start to shine through. Once the blood starts to flow and people begin to die, it's up to Autumn and her fellow witch gals to try and stop Vallie, before it's too late (but not before a quick little Wicca lesbian encounter, reeeooowwrr!). Will the luscious ladies be able to stop Vallie before it's two late? Will another shirt drop before the closing credits? You will find answers to these and many more questions buried deep within The Coven.
While The Coven may not be a great film by any stretch of the imagination, as an exploitation sampler platter it delivers quite a bit of the goods. There is plenty of bare skin (mostly supplied by the same two members of the coven) and a decent amount of gore (a face crushing and a few nasty slashings). Nothing too groundbreaking, but as a scratch for the exploitation itch, The Coven is definitely worth a look. I'm no pervert (am I?), but the only element that gives The Coven an upper edge on most other PG-13 horror films of today (theatrical releases mind you) is the nudity and violence factor. Story wise there's not much to offer here that you haven't already seen. Aesthetically there are a few shining moments that may lead one to thinking that with a bit of the green behind it The Coven could have actually survived as a real film. Performances are surprisingly decent as well and I found myself to never be bored during the films 75 minute running time.
Also included on the tape in addition to the feature itself was a trailer for The Coven and about 10 minutes of bloopers/outtakes (featuring more of that bare skin, dig in fellas).
The Coven is not going to change your outlook on life or open any avenues of discussion over a café latte. You're not going to discuss character's motivations or the depth of symbolism or hidden meaning. I hope this doesn't sound chauvinistic, but this is what you will get when you invest some time with The Coven. A group of sexy dames strutting around in sexy outfits, some mild yet satisfying gore, a solid amount of bare skin, decent performances and for the most part... a well crafted SOV horror flick that's a decent pass of time for about 75 minutes. I happen to like SOV horror, films that don't star the likes of Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillpe or Freddie Prinze Jr. You can do a heck of a lot worse than spending some time with the luscious (virtually unkown) ladies of The Coven.
