Wren

Here it is folks! I finally found a town with a little something for everyone. Everything from necrophilia to ritual cleansing can be found in Schlarb, Ohio. This town's population makes most mental hospitals look like a resort!

Where do I even start! I'm not sure if there's a real story here. It's kind of a collection of incidents and accidents that happened while a camera is rolling. You've got Dickie (Toby Radloff) who's just looking for love in all the wrong places and ends up finding it in a dumpster. All the glade in the world wouldn't keep this relationship smelling fresh! Pricey (Lori Scarlett) who's going through life mute and trying not to dine on skinned squirrel. Her only companion is a look alike doll of herself and the neighbor's son. Then there's Mathew (Jeremy Maes) a.k.a The Licker. Guess what he does? He's not particular about what he licks either. Seems like anything will do. Now throw in our strong silent type, Caduceus (Shane Koltnow) and you've got all the Townies you need to make a movie.

Ahhhhh! How about some healthy competition for our Townies? Ok! You've got Thad (Sean Woolf) and Billy (Phil Schmeidel) who just live to mess with the Townies. Nothing's to low! Not even faking a German accent while making crude comments about some ones mother. Then there's little Kelli (Shannon McNamara) who will do anything to impress Thad. She'll even hit Caduceus with a her just for him. She even gets Thad and Billy to go after him because she's convinced Caduceus is stalking her. Not the brightest crayons in the box but I guess they'll have to do!

I have to say, I really loved this movie. It was bizarre beyond belief but it also had some style! It was hilarious in spots (in a sick and demented kind of way) but truly funny. How often do you get a sneak peek into peoples oddities! Half of the time I was wondering who was sadder. The Townies at least had some drive and purpose to their lives (we'll exclude the necrophilia from this equation) but the so called "normal" folks had nothing to do but pick on the Townies.

I also loved the way it was filmed in black and white and had that old B film quality to it. The shots were a bit grainy from time to time but gave it feel of something real. Instead of Technicolor you end up with what almost looks like newsreel footage. It suited the movie wonderfully. The movie is a bit raw and rough around the edges, so what other way could you go but black and white?

The audio was not great, presented in Dolby Digital Stereo and like the rest of the film, was a little rough around the edges. It wasn't so bad that it was a distraction but it was a little hard to hear in spots. The soundtrack, by Fuzzhead was pretty decent. It fit in well with the visuals of the movie. It was a little quirky in a funhouse kind of way. I really think it finished out the picture nicely.

Special Edition Features include: Commentary with filmmaker Wayne Alan Harold, outtakes and behind the scenes footage, interview with Toby Radloff, Toby Radloff web segments, short film "Payback Is A Bitch", Preview for "Aberration Boulevard", production still gallery, and other Tempe DVD trailers.

Townies was a whole lot of fun. I would certainly recommend it to people who don't offend easily. Some of the content does go a little beyond what most people find to be acceptable viewing material, but it's definitely a unique film and worth checking out!
