Lawrence

Vincent Price returns to a formula that helped put him back on track. With Theater of Blood, the Phibes formula is put to the test in a sickly gory, dark humor filled tale of revenge and murder. How does Theater of Blood stand in comparison to its predecessors? The answer lies ahead.

Price stars as Edward Lionheart, a classically trained actor, spurned by critics, and out for revenge. Thought to be dead, Edward is given a prime opportunity to sneak into the lives of the critics who have failed him and dispose of them one by one. Taking a cue from several of Shakespear's finest works, Edward begins his mission. Re-enacting some classic Shakespearean moments, each critic is "done in", similar in style and tone, to that of the Phibes films, with a Shakespearean twist. Special mention goes out to the "pound of flesh" correlation, from Merchant of Venice.

Theater of Blood has it all. It's extremely gory, and full of dark humor, and wit. Once again Price is allowed to shine. Price is at his finest in this role, in one of the few films that can rival The Abominable Dr. Phibes, in its sheer and utter mayhem, served with a touch of class.

All things considered, the presentation of Theater of Blood on DVD is quite pleasing. There are some minor speckles / dirt present on the print, but overall, quite acceptable for a film of this age. Theater of Blood is certainly not timeless, with the 70's dress, etc, so you won't feel like you're watching a film made yesterday. Colors are strong and stable, and the 1:66.1 framing looks as accurate as can be.

The mono soundtrack presents little to no problems. Audio is clear, especially dialogue which is very important. There is some minor distortion, which obviously comes from poorly miked scenes from the original production. Certainly nothing to be concerned about here, overall, a top notch presentation from MGM.

Extras are pretty much non-existent, as expected. Most of MGM's budget titles come with nothing but a trailer at best, and this title is no exception. As stated before there is room for little to no complaints, at the $15 price point.

Overall, a great presentation, once again, from MGM. Price fans should rejoyce, and grab this title asap. Casual fans of horror, should not hesitate, as this title is sure to please. There's a little something for everyone here, and it's all good.
