Lawrence

Terror Toons certainly is an odd one that's for sure, I'm pretty comfortable in saying that there's nothing quite like it available in the indie market today. I was in the mood for some no-brainer indie horror thrills on my sick day and decided to take a chance on Terror Toons. I didn't know what to expect, but as usual, I was braced for the worst. I mean c'mon, with indie horror you never know these days, right? To my surprise, I found Terror Toons to be an extremely enjoyable 75-minute ride. The thing that shocked me the most about this indie flick, is that it was shot for under $3,000 and in just 3 days!

Candy and Cindy are left home alone for a couple of days by their parents things are expected to go quite smoothly. Young Candy (well, she's really not THAT young, but it fits the program) receives a DVD in the mail entitled Terror Toons (says in French accent - But of course!) and pops it in the ole' DVD player. In the meantime Cindy invites a few friends over for some fun in the empty house, and the first ever documented game of strip Ouija begins.

While the kids are having some innocent fun downstairs, Candy is enjoying her DVD, that is until the stars of Terror Toons - Dr. Carnage and his assistant Max Assassin leap out of the TV and rip out poor Candy's spine. From this point on Carnage and Assassin (kind of a mad scientist and crazy ape) wreak bloody mayhem in the house until Cindy discovers that the devil himself has been mass producing these DVDs and it's up to Cindy and her alter ego in the cartoon dimension to try and stop the devil...that is before her parents get home.

One of the things that I really dug about Terror Toons was its slick look, despite its extremely micro budget. The whole flick takes place in one house and features a ton of effective blue screen effects (cheap, but effective). The action that takes place within the Terror Toons cartoon world is very funny and bloody, combining live action and the aforementioned blue screen effects. The costumed effect of the cartoon characters in the real world is also pulled off quite smoothly as well. The whole affair is quite cheap and campy, but in the world of Terror Toons, it works. Also of note are the outfits worn by our two cartoon devils Dr. Carnage and Max Assassin, very creative and over the top.

Performances are all above average (everyone is a heck of a lot older than they're supposed to be), it's obvious that everybody had their heart and soul in this production and had a really good time making it. It's not too often that an indie production comes together like this and on such a small scale to boot, but somehow Terror Toons makes it work. Some of the actors ham it up a bit too much, but in an instance like this where it's supposed to be very campy, it works and is never really annoying. The script is never pretentious or "Scream" like which is something that I've grown to hate in a lot of indie productions recently. Terror Toons is funny on its own terms and is quite original as well.

There's plenty of blood and gore to be found within, and this cartoon universe that seems to surround us makes it all the more comical. A lot of the gore is simple splatter, like intestines being pulled out or stomachs being ripped open. There are a few inventive and well-handled effects as well including a juicy scene in which a scalp is torn off. There are very few (if any) gore scenes that don't include a comic twist, everything remains low key with a wicked comedic twist throughout.

Shot on video, Terror Toons looks about as good as one could expect on DVD. Colors are fairly sharp with only a few instances of light artifacting. The basic Dolby Surround track sounds great with nice clear dialogue and nice separation of effects and music. The cartoon-like soundtrack is a lot of fun and really effective (even if there are some moments that were a little to Beetlejuice-ish for my tastes). Surrounds are quite active as well with ambient effects that fill the room.

Extras are abundant and even though they're split into different sections could flow just as well as one piece. Segments include interviews with cast and crew, behind the scenes, bloopers and special effects. Other extras include trailers for a host of other Brain Damage films on DVD including one for Terror Toons.

Terror Toons is original, gory and funny, what more could you ask for? This disc is not going to be for everyone, but for those looking for some fresh indie horror with a unique twist would be hard pressed to do much better than Terror Toons.
