God Fucking Bless Lloyd Kaufman... You see, there are masterpieces...and then there are MASTERPIECES. And
there are movies that fit into either one of these categories: Pink
Flamingos, To Kill A Mockingbird, Dead Alive, Gone With The Wind...and
yes...even Terror Firmer.
Now, I've grown up with Troma Films, and I've been quoting lines from
Toxic Avenger since I was 12 years old, and I'm happy to say that I am glad
such a production company exists. They fill that niche for no-budget, campy
horror that I need in my life, and you have to love 'em for continuing to
release the most completely wacked-out, politically incorrect cult films in
the
United States. God Bless Lloyd Kaufman!
And now you must check out Troma's personal masterpiece, Terror Firmer-
Unrated Director's Cut. This two disc special edition box set is so packed
with extras, you need to set a day aside to soak it all in, and
have yourself a little Troma holiday. Lloyd Kaufman has made a film with so
much crap going on in every frame, that the film gives off the same
hyperactive zaniness of classics like Casino Royale and Beyond The Valley Of
The Dolls, with its scenes filled with action taking place in the background
of the backgrounds.
Very loosely based on Lloyd Kaufman's autobiography All I Need To Know
About
Film-making I Learned From The Toxic Avenger, Lloyd Kaufman directs himself
as the blind director of a low budget horror movie (a new Toxie movie!),
where the crew is mysteriously being murdered by a serial killer...an average
plot, but hardly an average movie...I promise you. And the strange thing
about this movie, at least for me, is that I really felt like I was beginning
to understand what Kaufman and Troma are doing. It sounds crazy, but they are
truly making a form of art on nobody's terms but their own, and they love
doing it. Sounds kind of deep for a film that includes Ron Jeremy as a
deformed father, Benny hill-style sound effects, a Lunachicks cameo, and lots
of jiggle, but it's true.
Disc One of the set contains, the film, digitally mastered, and allows
you to watch the film with deleted scenes or without. However there is a
little pause when it punches in the extra scenes, though it's definitely
worth watching the film with them in. There are three separate commentaries
by Lloyd Kaufman, the actors, and the editors, some clips of Troma at
Cannes, audition tapes, a great blooper reel, and the standard trailer. I
assure you, all of this is worth watching.
Disc Two contains an incredible full length documentary on the making of
Terror
Firmer, that I found as entertaining as the film itself. Watching manic
Kaufman, trying to control the set is classic, and you really get a feel of
their guerrilla-style of film-making. In one hysterical scene, they are
kicked off the sidewalk, due to having no permit, and decide to film a street
scene on a rooftop as a substitute, with a few trash cans for props. Another
scene shows a midget walking off the set, refusing to film his scene because
the movie is too strange for him.
Ahhhh Troma! In addition, included are three Lloyd Kaufman directed music
videos ( Lunachicks, Entombed, and DJ Polo), interviews with stars, and Troma
Trailers.
Major DVD release companies should learn a lesson from the 25 year-old
Troma. They truly do know how to put out a special edition set, by throwing in
everything that one wants to see, and its genuinely interesting extras.
Congratulations to Troma, you've made your Citizen Kane! Terror Firmer is a
must have for any Troma fan. Buy it now!
