What could be worse than three vampires hell bent on world domination? How about otherworldly vampires who can move in daylight and can't be killed by normal means? Well, the world has waited long enough. Here it is folks!
Three vampires from a parallel earth have come to our planet through a crack in the time space continuum. One of them, Alyssa (Leanna Chamish) is the queen of these other worldly beasts. These vampires are from a pure blood line and intent on taking over our planet. They have run themselves out of humans to feed on back home and have had to resort to feeding on other vampires. Yummy! Vampire cannibalism!
Up against these bloodsuckers is a combat trained priest, Father John (George Stover) a geeky scientist who's afraid of his on shadow, Dr. Brian Smithers (Steven King) and an electronics expert, Shannon Wallace (Ashira Zimra). They've been hunting vampires in the parallel world since they can remember and are the only humans left. They follow Alyssa and her goons through the crack into our world. Their plan falls a little short because they have never fought any of the purebloods before. The purebloods are stronger and faster than the vampires who have just been infected with the disease.
They recruit the help of police detective Jake Bishop (Jamie Bell) and together they need to devise a plan to wipe out the purebloods. Good luck guys! Stakes tend to blow up when you try to stick it in a pureblood and holy water doesn't have much of an effect either. What to do, what to do? The hunt is on. Not only do they have to kill the purebloods but they need to kill all the minions that have been made along the way. Sounds like a fun way to spend a day or two, doesn't it folks?
Honestly, this movie was kind of fun. When I read the synopsis, I wasn't all that eager to see it however, the storyline is a bit different. I'm a big fan of most vampire movies and of vampire lore. The same rules that apply in those stories don't really apply here and they kind of threw the old tales out the window and made up the rules as they went along. The rules didn't change much for the lesser vampires but the purebloods can even run around in the daylight. If you're looking for traditional vampire lore then you're going to want to skip this one.
Now, the dialog was written pretty well but didn't flow all that great. It wasn't horrible but it didn't run as smooth as I normally like. The story did move along at a fairly good pace. The scenes connected well with each other and there were no unexplained gaps in the storyline along the way. It was well executed. I wouldn't really rate this as a gory film but there is a good amount of blood in it. The body count is pretty high, the fight and action scenes were well choreographed and the actors carried them off in a realistic manner.
There were also some great digital effects used as well. For the most part, the effects blended in with the scenes and with the characters they used them on. You could definitely tell they were effects but I still liked them. It was a pretty decent effort. Oh! Did I mention the slight fetish theme in the clothing for the Queen of the purebloods? If tightly laced PVC is up your alley, then this might be worth a look.
The video quality was fairly good and so was the lighting. There were some dark scenes but never to the point where you couldn't make out the details. There were no elaborate set pieces but the sets they used fit into the story well. The audio, however, left a lot to be desired. I spent most of the movie with remote in hand. I had to constantly turn up the dialog and turn down the action. There wasn't to much that could be done about it either because there is no audio set up feature on the disk.
The special features include: Full Motion Scene Selection; The making of "stakes"; Producer/Director Commentary; "Stakes" Trailers; "Harvesters" Trailer; and a Bloopers Reel.
This movie wasn't really my thing, but like I said, it was fun. There were a few times I caught myself rolling my eyes and sighing heavily but it wasn't a waste of time to watch. If you're a fan of the old B horrors, this is right up your alley. It's a great way to pass some time if you're not looking for something too heavy.
