Sometimes all it takes is a video box cover to let you
know what you are in for. THE SEEKERS plays it's hand
early with the catchphrase, 'before "The Ring" there
was...' That's right! THE SEEKERS. Well, since the
date on this DVD is 2003 and the Hollywood version of
THE RING is a 2002 release, then we start out this
whole experience with a little bit of fibbing.
The basic premise is that there is this Goth chick
named Tota Levil (Hey! Keep the groaning down back
there I didn't write the damned movie.) Seems she has
a video store that only carries one video. The video
shows Tota and her idea of getting even. This is the
director's excuse to chop the film up into three
little vignettes. Tota believes that if people are
screwing you over, kill them. And if you ain't got
the guts for it then she'll do it for you. But, if
you make her get her hands dirty then she's gotta take
you out too. So, our main man Scott (Rob
Merickel) has hit rock bottom. His ugly
girlfriend is cheating on him with some fat bastard.
His fat ass boss (Director John Bowker) has just fired
him. Seems the comic shop business isn't what it used
to be. It also seems that Scott lives in a town where
every man, himself included, is a big guy. And that's
big in an unflattering way.
Completely depressed Scott hears a commercial for a
new video store on the outskirts of town. And isn't
that what we all want when our life is in the shitter?
To watch a video? Okay, that part is pretty dead on
for me, but I really don't like video stores with no
sign and a blind chick running the show.
The blind chick being Tota in one of her clever
disguises. This particular, elaborate disguise being
sunglasses. So Scott takes the video to his sisters
house. Can't go home while his dog of a girlfriend is
banging some greasy guy, right?
So the video is magical and able to talk to Scott.
This is where Tota outlines her plot for Scott's
revenge on the people that wronged him. The vignettes
are dull and meaningless with the final one being the
most ludicrous. Seems that if your Ouija Board is
possessed and you put it in the fireplace, it will
exude this white gooey substance. If this is tossed
in the nearest trash can it will turn into a cartoon
Satan. Not a real cartoon, but a guy in
horrendous makeup with all the trimmings. Horns, red
skin, big chin. You know, Satan, dork lord of the
underworld and no, dork is not a typo.
When Tota is finished with her little tales she
expects Scott to take out the people that done him
wrong. Thankfully, Chris, a former video watcher
comes to the rescue. He explains what happened to him
and how it almost made him kill his wife. Together
Scott and Chris go in search of Tota to end her reign
of terror.
Does it sound like I wasn't overly fond of this
picture. Don't get me wrong, I thought Felicia
Pandolfi who plays Tota Levil was cute. And
Director Bowker manages to put a whole ton of that
Oregon skin up on the screen. I can't
believe how many ugly girls are willing to
take off their clothes for micro budget films. The
one really attractive girl in the entire film keeps
her clothes on. The rest is substandard and that's
being kind.
I checked the website www.pipedreamsent.com to see
more of Bowker's output and I was shocked. His
Evilmaker series looks good and has some really
attractive women in it. Maybe there's a limit to the
good looking women in Oregon and John has exceeded his
quota.
In conclusion, the film tries to play off the
popularity of a film that is a remake of a superior
foreign film and fails miserably. Hopefully this is
the exception to the rule for Mr. Bowker and he won't
do it again.
The DVD is widescreen and has a commentary by the
director. In addition we get a mindless, disjointed
documentary of behind the scenes stuff along with
bloopers and a music video. Seems like a lot of
extras for such a mediocre film.
