Lawrence

Savage Beach, the third Sidaris feature to star the lovely duo of Dona Speir and Hope Marie Carlton is arguably my favorite Sidaris film next to Picasso Trigger. Savage Beach is simply brilliant in its delivery and execution and is in my opinion the grandest of excuses for the whole Sidaris motto; Bullets, Bombs and Babes. What a motto it is, so true, so very true, it's all you need. Savage Beach arrives on DVD in style in a packed special edition. Every aspect of this release is near flawless read on to find out more.

As far as the story goes, well there's not much you really need to know to be honest. Donna and Taryn (Speir and Carlton) are two sexy undercover agents. The two are forced to battle many clashing baddies as everybody searches for a pot of missing gold on, yup you guessed it Savage Beach. One thing about Sidaris is that he writes a mean script. There is usually so much going on, that at points it can actually be difficult to follow. No worries though as you'll be most concerned with following the many real life explosions (no CGI here, Sidaris LOVES to really blow shit up) and so many semi-naked (as well as sometimes fully naked) hot chicks running around with nice semi-automatics. Only Sidaris can pull off a scene like this; two busty females piloting a plane in turmoil and what do they do? They take the time to "change out of their wet tops". Once again, simply brilliant. If you're looking for something with either ethics or morals, well you've certainly come to the WRONG place. Sidaris films are about resting the brain and having a blast (literally) and on this level, he nearly always delivers (sometimes in spades).

The thing that's truly amazing about Andy's films is that they never manage to look cheap. Obviously shot very quickly and on very low budgets every penny must appear on film. Whether it's the lighting, sets, props or editing, everything comes together in the end to form a really polished product. This is the one thing that I've always really admired about Sidaris and his films over the years. Well, that and the fact that he has gorgeous women running around with guns. Sidaris is a very bright man with smart delivery. Although one could see women as being exploited in his films (not me though), the women in his films seem to almost always outsmart their male counterparts. Brilliant.

Presented on DVD full frame (presumably its original ratio) Savage Beach looks incredible. There is really no evidence of print damage whatsoever and colors are so sharp and vibrant they just leap off the screen. Those used to the late night cable airings of Savage Beach are in for a rude awakening as this is Savage Beach like you have never seen it before. The crisp clear picture is truly a sight to behold, very impressive indeed.

Audio is presented in "ultra stereo" and is equally impressive. What we have here is a Dolby Surround mix with nice clear dialogue and minimal yet effective surround effects. There is no distortion to speak of whatsoever; audio is nice and clear.

One thing the Sidaris clan didn't do with this release is slouch on the extras as this disc is packed! There are no less than 12 trailers covering the entire Sidaris film collection. We're given the option of watching the trailers individually or with a "play all" option that runs through all 12 trailers. This play all feature is a brilliant touch and extremely thoughtful to the viewer. The big boys could really take a lesson from this indie produced DVD as this is most certainly DVD done right. Next up is a featurette that runs about 45 minutes entitled "Andy Sidaris Film School". This is a brilliant feature that includes tons of great behind the scenes footage and info. The viewer is given great insight into the indie film process and it's definitely a nice touch. Also included is a brief (nicely laid out) still gallery and a fold out booklet. Last but not least is a full-length feature commentary with both Andy and Arlene Sidaris that is truly a gem in itself. The two don't let up for a minute as they divulge many secrets that went into the production of this film. Definitely one of the most entertaining commentaries I've encountered. The film itself also features an introduction from Mr. Sidaris and Julie Strain (Return to Savage Beach). Once again, the viewer has the option of watching the film with or without the introduction.

This is truly a brilliant presentation from start to finish. The transfer is top-notch and the extras are extremely impressive. Also a plus is the way the extras are laid out and the many options the viewer has in checking everything out. There's no doubt about it, this DVD was produced with the fan in mind, and it really shows. Fans of Sidaris and his work (I know you're out there, I'm not the only one!) would be wise to run and not walk to the store. This is the second Sidaris release we've checked out here and we have yet to be disappointed. Anyone looking to let off a little steam would be wise to check out this release as well. How much fun can you fit on a dual layered DVD? Well, not since the jam-packed Something Weird discs have I been this impressed. Did I mention that the chapter stops have icons next to them (bullets, bombs and babes) allowing the viewer to obtain a sneak peak as to what's in store? In the mood for just babes? Then you'll probably wanna check out Chapter 6. Wanna see some bullets and bombs? Take a look at Chapter 10. Brilliant I say... simply brilliant.
