Lawrence

There's underground cinema, and then there's underground cinema. Pig is most definitely an example of the latter as you don't get much more underground than this. Cult Epics has put together a nice package chronicling the history of this indie short and at the same time put together a nice testament to the late Rozz Williams.

Pig, the story of a faceless killer and his victim stars Roz Williams (formerly of Christian Death). The film, a collaboration between Roz and Dutch born Filmmaker Nico B. is obviously a very personal and meaningful project to all involved. This is a very surreal experience that is not to be taken lightly. Shot on 16mm in B&W there is no sync sound, just some eerie musical accompaniment. Despite the short running time, the film doesn't shy away from trying to shock and disturb. Pig contains some very real genital piercing as well as a scene in which the word PIG is scrawled on the victims chest with a real razor blade, not easy to watch.

The quality is what one would expect from such a low budget film. The opening is marred with scratches and film dirt (the opening and ending were shot on Super 8 which would explain why they look as they do, as mentioned in the commentary, this was a stylistic choice) but after a minute or two the print clears up and the B&W photography takes on a life of its own (when we shift to 16mm). Sound is clear and acceptable, once again considering the source, we couldn't have expected any better.

The DVD is packed with extras that include outtakes (raw unused footage basically), a photo gallery, Super 8 test film (with or without commentary by Nico B.) and a memorial video dedicated to Roz Williams. There is also an optional commentary with Nico B. that runs the lenghth of the feature. The one really cool extra included is a replica of the book used in the film entitled, Why God Permits Evil. This 40 page booklet recreates the entire booklet from the film that Roz apparently created himself, very nice.

Fans of Roz or Christian Death will most likely want to pick up the DVD asap. Fans of underground cinema (Richard Kern, Lydia Lunch, etc) may also want to check this film out. This is a limited pressing, so if you want to grab one you should probably act now, I'm sure they won't be around forever. More info can be found by visiting the official Cult Epics web site here.
