Well, folks, I'm back! And I bring with me a look at Mike Lyddon's Night For Nixie. Not since Jose Prendes's The Monster Man (review here) have I felt such an exquisite need to weep for my favorite genre. I have the greatest respect for the people who attempt to take a story line and transform the idea into a movie. However, there are times (like now) when I wonder if in the rush and excitement of bringing a concept to life on film, if some moviemakers actually take the time to actually watch what they've produced. This particular gem took me no less than two tries to sit through and watch to its completion. You would think you could get through seventy-three minutes of movie misery fast enough - but in this case, you would be dead wrong.
What can I possibly say about this movie? If you're looking for a synopsis here, you're out of luck. If I wanted to be generous, I would say that this movie was just a little confusing. If I wanted to be honest, I'd have to say that without the synopsis on the back of the box, I would have very little idea what I was actually watching. What I can tell you is that the movie comes complete with a truly bizarre group of characters. Including Sanmento's own Captain Happy, who hands out free meat from out of the back of a Pest Control van, a low class private detective who gets no respect (and deserves even less), and Nixie, a soul-sucking spider who looks a little too much like a Halloween lawn ornament ready to conquer the world.
Throughout the movie, I was greeted by entire scenes riddled with unnecessary streams of curses and little else, a few attempts at racial humor, a scene with a hooker that didn't seem to have much of a place here to begin with, and no real idea what (if any) story Mike Lyddon was trying to tell with this disjointed collection of scenes. There really wasn't a whole lot to connect the characters OR the story from scene to scene. Also, let me take this moment to thank Mr. Lyddon for the discomfort he caused me when he decided NOT to leave the footage of the detective taking a crap and masturbating to prepare for the hooker on the cutting room floor. I guess those little bits were too good to throw out, huh? At least I got a break from the movie while I was waiting for my vision to return.
No horrible movie is without its good points though. In this case the pickings are slim in the good department but there is a thing or two that I'd like to mention. First, this movie had one of the greatest DVD cases I've ever seen! It had this great little button that held the DVD tight and released it with ease! Of course, I wouldn't have minded if this one had came loose and became too damaged to watch but you can't win all the time. There were also some fairly decent computer effects in this movie. I was a little taken off guard by them because there was definitely some time invested in them. Unfortunately, three or four really nice effects are a wasted effort when you don't put a movie around them.
Included on this DVD was the feature film, Night For Nixie, the original release trailer, and a bonus short film, Mutilation Maniacs. Nixie is presented full frame and remains repulsively clear from start to finish. The sound was also one of the movies better points being that it was fairly well balanced throughout, the only exception was a few times when the sound effects overwhelmed the dialogue.
On a whole this movie was a disappointment. It was vague and longer than it had any right to be. I can't say I would recommend this movie to many, but I can recommend that you avoid free meat and men with giant yellow smiley heads. Nothing good comes out of having any sort of contact with either of them.
