Wren

Hey folks! I'm back with a look at The Monster Man the kind of movie that makes me want to slap the screenplay writer's mother for encouraging him as a child! Once again I find myself with nothing nice to say!

In the year 2210 a plague is set loose on the planet earth that wipes out it's populous. The only problem I'm seeing so far is that it missed a couple of its intended targets. Only one single man and woman remain. Jake (Jose Prendes) thinks he is the last man standing and in a sense he is as the only other human left is Katherine, (Scream Queen Linnea Quigley of Return of the Living Dead et al). Are they to be the next Adam and Eve? I shudder to think that this guy will be responsible for replenishing the Earth's gene pool.

As it turns out an alien race delivered the plague to Earth so they could clear out the human race. They need a new planet and apparently ours feels just cozy enough for them. The only problem is, there are still two humans left. There's only one thing to do - send in the Alien Ninjas! Their job is to find our little Adam and Eve before they find each other and kill them (Slowly! Please make it a slow death).

OK, let me say that I have a few complaints about this movie (just a few?). First off, little Jake doesn't look like he could wipe his own butt let alone fend off a legion of Alien Ninjas. If I were Katherine, I'd tie him to the nearest tree just so he wouldn't follow me home! Remember how I was saying there's a fine line between a great campy movie and an obnoxious campy movie? Can you guess which one this is? Please understand that I can appreciate a well-placed fart joke as well as anyone but again, there's a line. This movie comes complete with farting roosters, squirrels, and aliens and not to mention your occasional farting dead alien. This goes on for ninety-six minutes worth of movie! How much gas does one movie need? Ok, I think you get the picture.

Let's talk about the sound. There was no audio set up on this DVD, the sound was simply atrocious! Believe me when I tell you that I couldn't hear a good eighty-five percent of the dialog (I'm not sure if it's blessing or a curse) over the three chord guitar soundtrack that went through most of the movie. Most of the time, even with no soundtrack playing the audio was completely muffled and I couldn't understand it even when I turned it up. Oh! There was one bit of sound that was crystal clear through the whole movie. Can you guess? Every fart rang true! Maybe this just wasn't a good day to turn on my DVD player?

The film was present in full screen format and thankfully there were no special features to add to my viewing enjoyment except for some deleted scenes that run through the credits. I only managed to catch them because I was stunned from the horror of the film itself. It was like looking at a ten-car pile up on the interstate. I just couldn't tear my eyes away.

Incase you were wondering who to credit (blame) for the making of this movie, Jose Prendes wrote, directed and starred in this little beauty. I'm not saying that the idea was a bad one. I happen to be a great fan of apocalypse storylines, but this one really didn't do it for me. In an effort to be silly and not take itself too seriously, the movie came across as annoying and really left me wondering why someone would even go to the effort of making it to begin with.
