Lawrence

Tinto Brass follows up The Key with the much more lighthearted sexual romp, Miranda. This time around Tinto delves deeper into soft-core erotica so much so that at times the onscreen shenanigans verge on hard core. This film is certainly not for the prudish or weak-hearted, but then again are any Tinto films? I must also express my displeasure in the lack of ass in this film. Believe me, there's plenty, but for a Tinto film I would have expected a bit more onscreen ass slapping, but maybe that's just me.

The buxom Serena Grandi (The Grim Reaper, Bava's Delirium) stars as the title character Miranda (a sort of soft-core AMELIE if you will), a tavern owner and all around pleasure givin' love machine. Among her repeated conquests are a local boy (Andrea Occhipinti of New York Ripper), an elderly politician (Andy J. Forrest) and a visiting soldier with many a bizarre fetish. All the while, poor Miranda teases those less fortunate (meaning those unable to bed her) and searches for the perfect mate. From the looks of things, Miranda would be much happier with the sampler platter. Of course there is plenty of skin on display (of the male and female variety) some "close call" sexual situations (I'll be damned if it didn't slip in once or maybe twice). Miranda can be quite a satisfying experience (for the most part) even if things do get a bit more European than I'd normally like to see (if you know what I mean and I think you do).

Brass succeeds with Miranda in that he produces a much more interesting story (and characters) and some truly witty dialogue than some of his other efforts. As usual Brass exhibits his expertise with the camera and winds up producing a nicely composed film that outclasses many erotica films in comparison. The film manages to never look cheap, a feat that Brass is always able to pull off and I commend him for that (I also spoke about this fact in my review for his film, The Key).

Miranda is presented in a nicely letterboxed transfer that satisfies on many levels. Although the film looks a bit soft and bright (once again, I'm sure this is inherit in the original source material, 80's photography anybody?) colors are fairly sharp and stable, and there is minimal print damage. There is an occasional spec and a few light scratches but for the most part the transfer is presented nice and clean.

Audio is presented in mono and sounds just fine. There is some minor hiss in a few scenes but it clears up just as quickly as it's noticed. Dialogue is clear, and the dub job is actually not half bad with voices that seem to match with the actors fairly well (unusual, especially for a film of this type). The score provided by Riz Ortolani (Cannibal Holocaust) is a great one and sounds fine as well (man a 2.0 stereo mix would have been sweet or how about an isolated score track?).

Extras include a brief video interview with the man himself Tinto Brass as well as three trailers for the other films in the Brass collection courtesy of Cult Epics (All Ladies Do It, The Key, Miranda). There is a brief still gallery and filmographies for Brass and Serena Grandi as well.

Fans of Brass and his films should be pleased, this film has never (and probably won't ever) looked better than this DVD. Those in the mood for a little ass-play should be amused as well. Get the razors out, it's gonna be a hairy ride.
