Just when I thought I couldn't possibly take another cookie cutter horror film about a group of friends camping in the wilderness (you know the kind) Brain Damage Films comes along with Joseph Clark's Massacre! A truly surprising look at the type of friends only a warped mind can reward you with. Hold on to your hats folks because this is one weekend trip that will be hard to forget!
Jeff (Joseph Clark) has packed up the minivan and is heading to a desolate location to go camping with his five closest friends. Believe me, folks, they couldn't get any closer if they lived right inside his head with him! They have a weekend to remember planned. Full of drinking, skinny dipping, and maybe even some gratuitous frolicking around a campfire. Sounds good so far, right?
Could it be their perfect weekend is heading for disaster? Of course it is! There's a madman loose in the woods! Didn't you see that coming? One by one the campers are being tortured, mutilated, and disgraced after their untimely ends (eeewww) . Could it be the creepy and disheveled man lurking around their campsite? You didn't really think I would tell you, did you? You'll have to check this one out for yourselves, folks, because you wouldn't believe this ending if I told you!
What an excellent movie! It has a little bit of everything. It's a little campy, a little scary, with a whole lot of gore and a huge body count! The little bit of comedy was also handled really well. The writing was excellent and the actors carried off the jokes in style. They even slipped in some sappy romance music during some of the sex scenes. It's a very well rounded movie. I've always been extremely picky about campy horror movies. Massacre is a fine balance between well done camp and camp that wears on my last nerve within ten minutes. This movie hit that balance perfectly!
There wasn't an audio set up on the screener I received but not to worry. The sound was well done. It stayed true through all the scenes whether there was a chainsaw (there's no finer sound in the world) hacking up a camper or if it was just the background music. The soundtrack was fairly decent as well. It complemented the film and fit in well with the scenes.
Massacre was presented full frame and the picture was clear and sharp through out the film. They used some really great digital tricks and some excellent make up effects as well and they didn't go light on the gore either! This movie has one of the most excellent chainsaw scenes I've ever seen. I've been watching slasher films a long time and I was really impressed.
Special Features on this disk include: Behind the scenes, Director and Cast Commentary, Out Takes, Production Notes, Biography of Joseph Clark, and Trailers.
I really can't say enough good things about this movie. It was a hell of a ride! There are enough twists to keep you guessing until the end and there are all kinds of little extras to keep you busy straight through the credits. Once again, Brain Damage comes through and I'll definitely be looking for more of Mr. Clark's work in the future.
