EI Cinema re releases their unrated erotic spoof Lord of the G-Strings under the title (and in an edited R-Rated cut), Lord of the Strings for mass-market consumption. As a fan of Lord of the G-Strings (read my review here, it's a good starting point) I was looking forward to the erotically toned down R-Rated version. I really felt that Lord of the G-Strings was a clever enough spoof and a lot of the drawn out scenes of eroticism did get a bit tedious. Knowing that quite a few comedic bits were either shortened or left out completely in the unrated version this R-Rated cut came as a most welcomed surprise. Let's see if the added scenes of spoof minus many moments of girl/girl action = happy film watcher. Since the story itself hasn't changed much, I've copied over the summary from my previous review, simply for the sake of consistency, so I'd say that this review would be approximately 78% new - not too shabby eh?
Our story begins in the land of Diddle Earth and the Throbbits (are you with me so far?) that inhabit the land. 3 young Throbbits Horny (Darian Caine) and Spam (AJ Kahn) are led by Dildo Saggins (super cute Misty Mundae) on a quest to destroy the sexually mind numbing G-string. Instructed by an alcoholic and touchy feely wizard, aptly named Smirnof (hilariously played by Michael R Thomas) the three Throbbits are instructed to throw the G-string deep into Party Pooper Volcano... and their quest begins.
Along the way the three Throbbits encounter much evil (or eee-v-iiil) as well as quite a few sexual encounters. Dildo must go incognito as Miss Undergarments so no one will be clued in to their most dangerous quest. It seems as if the legendary G-string has been known to have a mysterious sexual hold on people and many want to get there grubby little hands on it, ya dig? Our dear Throbbits are joined by Araporn (Barbara Joyce) on their quest and must avoid many dangers and obstacles. These dangers include (but are not limited to) an evil man-creature named Ballum, General Uptight and the evil Horspank, the dreaded Dorcs (as well as the Dorc forces) and dare I say it... the dutch oven of death!
Basically what EI Cinema has done is either taken out completely or extensively shortened many (if not all) of the playfully erotic moments that made Lord of the G-Strings strictly adult only fare. This isn't to say that Lord of the Strings is more kid friendly, because it isn't. What we have here is a title that is more rental or cable friendly. There's still plenty of nudity (strictly on the R-Rated level though - not much touchy feely), but there's also a lot more story that didn't make it into the G-Strings cut - and more story means more jokes and comedic bits. Actually, it's a smart move on the part of EI Cinema (using the name Forest Street Entertainment here) and if the title is strong enough to support itself without all of the extreme soft core action, then I say go for it.
I enjoyed Lord of the G Strings for its slick comedic wit, funny gags and surprisingly funny performances. Lord of the Strings inserts more of the horseplay and extends quite a few scenes from Lord of the G Strings as well. In addition, there are quite a few scenes that weren't in G Strings including (but not limited to) an entire Wizard of Oz bit. As expected, some of the gags work better than others, but most importantly - Lord of the Strings remains quite sexy and "adult" without being overly graphic or just plain overly long. The comedic scenes hold up quite well and as suspected are able to carry the story without having to rely on the extended scenes of a sexual nature. Strings also runs about 20-minutes shorter than G-Strings and the tighter cut does indeed help the action to move along at a much more brisk pace.
Quality wise, the film looks simply fantastic. Shot on 16mm (it's so great to see that this flick was shot on film) there is very little print damage to speak of and the transfer sports nice solid colors. The 2 channel stereo mix is equally impressive with clear dialogue, music and effects. For such a low budget presentation, Lord of the Strings looks and sounds pretty damn good, quite impressive.
Extras are a little lighter on this edition as well, they include the same music video found on G-Strings "Love Jones" along with 4 - Retro Seduction Cinema trailers. Finally, there's an extremely easy to find easter egg that brings us a brief interview with Seduction Cinema star John Link - weird.
For the rental market, Lord of the Strings will make for some quality late night viewing. For Seduction Cinema fans in general, I suppose it would have been nice to see a set with both versions, but I completely understand why they were kept separate, and it does indeed make sense. Either way you can't go wrong as long as you know exactly what you're in store for. With or without the extended scenes of erotic fodder, Lord of the Strings is an extremely funny and enjoyable flick. How do you like your satire - with or without kleenex? As for me, I'm glad to have both titles in my collection.
