Lawrence

Lust for a Vampire, also known by its more popular title "Cleavage for a Vampire" is 2nd in a kind of trilogy of erotic lesbian vampire films, produced by infamous British Hammer Studios. While not one of their best efforts, Lust still stands its ground, and is sure to satisfy genre fans, if not only from the presence of the luscious Yutte Stensgaard, which is worth the price of admission on its own.

Vampiress Carmilla Karnstein is reincarnated as the beautiful Mircalla (Yutte Stensgaard of Scream and Scream Again, and the British sex romp Zeta One). Upon her reincarnation, Mircalla is sent to a finishing school on the edge of town. Meanwhile, Novelist Richard Lestrange (Michael Johnson) manages to finagle his way into the school as a teacher, of course he has other intentions. It seems Richard has a soft spot for Mircalla; he's such a romantic too. Well, needless to say, Mircalla manages to cast her spell on those around her, (male and female) and people start dropping off, one by one. The deaths are all blamed on "heart attacks", but it doesn't take long for the local townspeople to catch on, and finish the deal, torches in hand.

Lust for a Vampire is not gonna match the likes of The Vampire Lovers (first in the trilogy) in substance or style, however, it is a nice companion piece. Anchor Bay continues their extremely respectful treatment of the Hammer Film library by lovingly bringing this title to DVD in an immaculate edition. The print used is blemish free, with nary a scratch or a spec to be found. There is evidence of slight grain, which comes straight from the source material. A few of the day for night scenes are a bit overly bright, but luckily most contain gratuitous flesh so no ones complaining. Colors are bright and sharp, with the blood reds dripping off the screen. Sound is Dolby Digital Mono and is equally impressive. Dialogue is crisp and clear, and the score has a chance to really shine through.

As if all this weren't enough, there are plenty of extras to keep you busy. An informative and entertaining audio commentary with Director Jimmy Sangster and Co-Star Suzanne Leigh, moderated by Hammer Historian, Marcus Hearn. They do tend to go off track from time to time, but one doesn't mind, because it's as good as listening to a few good friends chatting away, and they never stray from the general Hammer line of discussion. Also included is an original theatrical trailer, radio spots set to some stills, and a still/promo gallery, set to the score from the film. Brief talent Bios round out the extras, and Yutte fans should look for a nice little hidden feature on the extras screen.

Anchor Bay has done it again. This is a wonderful transfer and the extras are right on the mark. Hammer and Yutte fans alike need to check out this disc. Those in the mood for some classic Vampire erotica can't go wrong here either. while not quite on the same level as the work of Rollin, or Larraz's Vampyres, Lust for a Vampire should be satisfying enough to cure your fix. There's a little something for everyone in here, and it's good times all around!
