Lawrence

Cult Epics follows up their impressive release of Viva La Muerte with Fernando Arrabal's second and even more bizarre follow up film (if that's even possible) J'irai Comme Un Cheval Fou or I Will Walk Like a Crazy Horse. Completely off the wall and full of brilliant absurdity, I Will Walk Like a Crazy Horse has enough bizarre religious imagery to make a nun's head spin in disgust. It's pretty important that you know just what's in store for you, so be warned. If you are easily offended (or perplexed for that matter) then Arrabal's world is most certainly not for you. However if you consider yourself to be cinematically courageous (and extremely open minded), then I dare you to take a look at what I have just witnessed. I can easily say that this film is so good, it hurts.

It pains me to say it, but this is definitely another case of no description will do this film any justice. I Will Walk like a Crazy Horse NEEDS to be experienced, but I will do my best to sum it up for those who may be curious. A young man named Aden flees the city after the death of his domineering mother. It seems as if Aden is a suspect in his mother's untimely death, therefore he bolts for the desert. Aden happens upon a hermit named Marvel who also happens to be a dwarf. Marvel teaches Aden the wonders of nature, as Marvel is able to somehow communicate with both nature and animals. Aden is quite taken with Marvel (basically he falls madly in love with him on some level) and decides when the time is right to introduce his newfound friend to the city. Through a series of extremely odd misadventures, it's evident that the city does not agree with Marvel and vice versa. Throughout his unbelievable journey Marvel will fall in love, move into a penthouse suite, unwittingly join a circus and ultimately wind up literally devouring his best friend (in an ending that once again needs to be seen to be believed). This is a film that can be smart and scary, brilliant and frightening... it's a true cinematic masterpiece and I loved every minute of it.

I've heard in the past that I Will Walk Like a Crazy Horse is thought of by many as being a bit more subdued in the shocking imagery dept. than its predecessor Viva La Muerte. All I have to say to that is, yeah right! This film is so off the wall and shocking, it's nothing short of brilliant! Every frame, camera movement, snippet of audio, you name it... has its place. As random as some of it seems, it's undeniably deliberate. Featuring a great ensemble cast and performances that could bring a tear to one's eyes, I Will Walk Like a Crazy Horse is an example of filmmaking at its finest. It's a shocking and rare cinematic experience and one that is most certainly to be cherished.

Not to be taken lightly, this film features some extreme imagery that just screams to shock and offend. Within the confines of this film you will bear witness to sex while wearing gas masks, a penis being lit like a candle, multiple cases of "tongue torture" and the unforgettable image of two grown men in silhouette taking a dump in the desert during a quiet sunset. It may sound like a lot to take in, and if you think that's where it ends then I need to tell you that we've only just begun. I Will Walk Like a Crazy Horse works as one of the most effectively (and stylistically) crude pieces of filmmaking I have ever seen.

I Will Walk Like a Crazy Horse is given the first class treatment by Cult Epics on this shiny disc. This is a near flawless presentation of a most unexpected film. This DVD sports sharp, bright colors and barely even a hint of grain or print damage. The 16X9 enhanced widescreen image is nothing short of a revelation.

Audio is presented in an impressive French mono track with removable English subtitles. As with Viva La Muerte sound is very important in I Will Walk Like a Crazy Horse with dialogue, music and effects all falling into place. I'm pleased to report that audio fares quite well with nice clear dialogue and no distortion to speak of.

Extras include a lobby card gallery, trailer for Viva La Muerte, liner notes and yet another wacky interview with director Fernando Arrabal. This time around (as with his interview on the Viva La Muerte disc) not only does he flip a chair around again like a circus seal, but he answers the phone in the middle of the interview and pretends as if he's talking to god... Oh Fernando! Go on with yourself!

What more can I say except that fans of the spectacular and bizarre owe it to themselves to not only pick up this DVD, but also Cult Epics previous Arrabal release of Viva La Muerte. Both films are extremely shocking and enjoyable with top-notch presentations to boot. Both films are essentials for any cult film collection in my book. I guarantee you will not be disappointed (not a guarantee).
