You know folks, there are just some days that it doesn't pay to turn on my DVD player. You guessed it, today was one of those days! When you watch a movie that features witty dialog like "don't shit a kitten" what do you really expect? Who knew that a simple haunted house tale would have me wishing for a Prozac prescription and a couple of shots of vodka. It wouldn't have stopped the movie but it sure as hell would have made it a lot more fun to watch!
When Marty Beck, a horror novelist loses his alcoholic wife and son (who may or may not have been an alcoholic himself) in a house fire, he decides to dive right back into work. He rents a reputed haunted house on Wingate Road to write his next book, figuring the fact that he wrote it in an actual haunted house would up the books popularity. What he doesn't count on is that the house really is haunted (who didn't see that coming?) and has been waiting for him to walk through the door and fulfill his destiny. Marty's not the brightest crayon in the box though, when strange things begin to happen around the house and his dreams turn into unexplained nightmares, Marty just shrugs it off and keeps on typing! That's the spirit, Marty! He figures it'll make a great horror novel. Could it be that our brave (though very dumb) boy is about to become a ghost story himself?
At the end of this movie, only one word sprang to mind. Pitiful! On top of pitiful, there was a good amount of confusion in the story. You'd watch a scene and have no real idea of what you were actually looking at or how it relates to anything within the confines of the story itself. There seemed to be just random camera shots with no sound and no purpose…then Marty would wake up. This guy spent a lot of time in this movie sleeping, maybe I missed the part in the plot where they tell you he had narcolepsy.
The movie opened with a similar type of imagery repeated throughout. I figured we'd find out later in the movie exactly who was who and why we were seeing them. Unfortunately, they didn't spend any time on the actual back-story. It was a ghost story that forgot all about the ghosts in question! All you find out was that there had been some "accidents" in the house. We really don't know who most of the ghosts were or how they died. You just get a lot of flashes of the ghosts accompanied by a sound effect that sounded suspiciously like a really slow bong hit. Actually, that would explain a lot come to think of it.
The movie was presented full frame and remained pretty clear for the most part for a low budget SOV flick. There are a few shots of the ghosts or of flashbacks that look like they were filmed a bit grainy on purpose. The audio remained clear as well presented as your typical horror movie fare. Except, of course for the bong hit sound effect. That was a new one for me. Special Features include: Filmmakers Commentary, Preview Trailers, Building The House feature, Behind The Screams, House Tour, Outtakes, and a photo gallery called Hall of Photos.
I have to admit that I was pretty disappointed with this one. I don't mind a simple story but at least make it a complete and simple story. It's like reading a book that has half the pages that deal with the plot ripped out. It makes for more frustration than it's worth and it takes what can be an excellent story, even though it's simple, and turns it into a complete mess.
