Lawrence

Infamous Underground filmmaker Nick Zedd hits DVD (for better or for worse!) with his horror-fest whack job flick Geek Maggot Bingo courtesy of Eclectic DVD. Lucky for us there are 3 extra Zedd short films included as well along with a few other enticing extras. For fans of Zedd, this disc is a collector's wet dream come true. For people who have never heard of Zedd or are unfamiliar with his work, this disc is likely to leave you upset, bewildered and in an angry letter writing kinda mood. Well, all I have to say to you is fuck-off! This disc wasn't made for you so head on over to Blockbuster and "keep it safe".

Geek Maggot Bingo is probably one of the most outrageous short films ever made. Completely over the top, cheap and poorly constructed, you'd be hard pressed to try and keep your eyes off of the screen. Basically a "re-envisioning" of the Frankenstein story, the film features outrageous painted sets (ala Cabinet of Dr. Caligari or a sub par stage production), horrendous acting, off the wall characters and the makings of a poorly executed student film. Fortunately, Geek Maggot Bingo is able to surpass the pretentious film school syndrome in that it has one key element missing from many other films of this caliber. It has character. Think of Geek Maggot Bingo as John Waters "light" (in its simplest terms) and you may begin to have an idea of what Zedd has in store for you. All this and a brief appearance by old time horror host Zacherley (who seems to really be out of his element) how can you go wrong? You just can't.

Now, when I use the term, Underground filmmaker, I don't use it lightly. Do the names Saint Reverend Jen, Lydia Lunch or Richard Kern ring a bell? If not, then once again I suggest that you may be barking up the wrong tree. This film is cheap, shoddy, poorly executed and downright ugly. I loved every minute of it! There aren't many people who make films like this, it truly defines the term filmmaker. The "I don't give a fuck attitude" and the fact that these films were made for no one except those involved.

Geek Maggot Bingo was shot on what appears to be cheapo film stock (16 or 8mm) and is presented here Full Frame in its original aspect ratio. The result is less than stellar with ample amounts of grain, splice marks, scratches, muted colors, you name it. Now, I'm not complaining mind you, I am just thrilled to pieces to have these treasures on DVD. I just don't want anyone going into this expecting stellar quality. The disc itself is mastered exceptionally well with no evidence of artifacting and a nice clear image. Sound is exactly what one would expect, it's a bit muted but dialogue is clear and audible. The sound on the SOV extras which I'll discuss next fares much better than the feature itself.

As stated earlier, extras are plentiful and most welcomed. We start thing off with no less than 3 other Zedd short films. First up is an 8 minute SOV effort entitled Elf Panties. In this film an elf (you can tell she's an elf from her pointy ears) repeatedly changes her panties while reading from Lord of the Rings (which excites her so much she secretes "elf juice") and eating a push up pop. With one too many Teletubbie references and more panty changing than I've ever seen in an 8 minute time frame, need I tell you that it's fucking brilliant? Next up is Lord of the Cock Rings which runs about 25 minutes and yup, it's another Lord of the Rings rip. Once again, SOV, there are few words that can justifiably describe the onscreen antics (as with Geek Maggot Bingo), you just need to experience it to believe it. The third short is entitled Thus Spake Zarathustra and runs at about 20 minutes. Also SOV, presented in B&W and given an aged film look, this one is no less a spectacle than all of the rest. Other extras include an exceptional still gallery and a cast interview shot some years ago that runs about 16 minutes. Lots of video glitches etc. are present, but once again, a true treasure and a real pleasure to have on this DVD release.

This DVD is a must own for fans of the likes of Zedd or Kern, true underground cinema that ultimately defies description. I'm not even going to try to convince outsiders to take a look. This disc is a true testament for fans, as we couldn't have asked for anything more. If you've never been and want to venture forth, by all means go ahead and dig in. Just don't say I didn't warn you, I don't need any angry phone calls here at Monster Headquarters. Enjoy!
