Lawrence

Crazy ass soft core porn/horror director Gaira is back, as if Entrails of a Virgin (review here) wasn't nearly enough, we've now got these Entrails of the Beautiful Woman to deal with as well! Somebody get the mop, that's a lot of entrails my friend, a lot of entrails. Synapse Films presents Entrails of the Beautiful Woman on DVD as a follow up to their fan friendly release of Entrails of a Virgin and the outcome is pretty much more of the same (that's a good thing by the way), just what you'd expect. A 'sequel' in name only, Entrails of the Beautiful Woman is (thankfully) equally as sexy, equally as violent, equally as perverted and depending on how you look at it, equally as short as Entrails of a Virgin, let the games begin!

So here's the deal. Our story opens as a Yakuza gang (in what appears to be a secluded warehouse) verbally and physically abuses a young girl. The young girl is beaten, raped and fed some sort of narcotic called 'Angel Rain' which ironically enough, just leaves her wanting more...of everything! Despite her sudden wantonness, she somehow manages to escape the clutches of the Yakuza and winds up staggering through the halls of a nearby clinic. The young girl is taken care of by a nurse/psychologist (she appears to be the only employee at the clinic) - but the effects of Angel Rain are far to strong for the young girl to deal with. So, she makes her way to the roof of the clinic (nurse in hot pursuit) and jumps to her freedom, as the helpless and all too concerned nurse looks on in horrid disbelief.

So anyways, remembering what the young girl had told her about the crooked Yakuza (is there any other kind of Yakuza?) and how she (and her sister who was slave traded apparently!?!) had been treated, the nurse decides to take out some good old-fashioned revenge of her own, for our young victim. The nurse (let's just call her nurse from now on) seduces and hypnotizes a member of the clan, balance of power is shifted many times over (between nurse and Yakuza, natch), all of which culminates to a very bloody final 10 minutes that of course has to offer a 'big penis supernatural element' (right out of nowhere) a la Entrails of a Virgin, dig it?

Right from the start, I have to say that I enjoyed (using the term quite loosely) Entrails of the Beautiful Woman, more than I did ...Virgin. The setback for both of these films is certainly found in the story dept. (which I'm sure is meant to be weak to begin with) is the dammed supernatural elements. As a matter of fact I found myself thinking - "Wow, this is pretty good, no crazy penis monster demon" and then - KAPOW! He entered the scene! Not that I have anything against crazy penis monster demons or anything (I'm an equal opportunity reviewer), but the 'human' element certainly helps to drive these pieces more as 'films' rather than just simple exercises in exploitation (which they essentially are).

So, what we are left with is a lot of soft-core sex (A LOT, including a scene of oral in silhouette), and a blood bath of a finale. Running just under 70 minutes, the film is actually quite brisk, and really never overstays its welcome. Optical fogging is not nearly as much of an issue this time around either, pubic regions are cleverly blocked in many scenes - way to go blocked pubic regions! Once the violence hits, it hits pretty hard, including the goopy penis monster (who at one point smooshes his ass in a Yakuza's face (in a fairly uncomfortable scene, to say the least), a smashed head, and random dismemberment. So, fans of the film, along with fans of vintage celluloid nudity and violence have certainly come to the right place. Just don't expect any redeeming social value whatsoever.

Quality for this release actually fairs better than Entrails of a Virgin (which wasn't half bad itself mind you), although I suspect that's because ...Virgin was shot under much darker, murkier settings. Entrails of the Beautiful Woman benefits from well lit scenes, which help to enhance viewing pleasure (among other things). There is some minor print damage here and there, but nothing really specific to speak of. Also of note is the fact that the packaging states a ratio of 1.78:1, which appeared to be more of a 1.85:1 image on my widescreen set. Audio is fine as well, clear with no distortion to speak of.

Extras include part two of an interview with director Gaira (with or without subs - and just as wacky as the interview on the ...Virgin disc) and a trailer. Also, the same liner notes on the history of optical fogging in Asian cinema accompany the nifty cover art. Easily recommendable to fans of these films, Synapse has done you all proud with these two releases. Just remember what you are getting yourself into and we all should be A OK. I don't want any angry letters, hear that y'all? None!
