Lawrence

"The first ever serial-killer superhero rock n' roll zombie road movie romance"

This is exactly how the producers of Die You Zombie Bastards are promoting their movie...what a claim! There are very few words in the English language that can do this film justice. As a matter of fact, I'm not even sure that there are ANY words in the English language that can match the experience of watching this film. As the tree said to the lumberjack, I'm stumped!

There's something that you're going to have to keep in mind when reading my review of Die You Zombie Bastards! Just some things you should know about this film upfront. It's stupid. It's really stupid. Not just that, but the film exhibits an unlawful amount of audacity in its execution. You'll have to have a high tolerance level for all things nonsensical. But that being said, there's something charming to be found in the films boldness. I admired the films attitude, as if to say, 'It doesn't really matter what you think about me, here I am...love me or leave me.' It's really this unpretentious honesty that I liked the most. It's an in joke, that I'm sure many will be frustrated by, while I on the other hand, was more than willing to go along with.

As our story opens, we're introduced to an unusual breed. A serial killer with a heart, named Red Toole. When we first meet Red he's hovering over a couple brandishing his weapon of choice. When he hears the couple profess their love for one another he stares into the sky and decides to move on, leaving the couple unharmed. Moments later, he massacres a group of hippies.

He then returns home to his loving wife Violet and the two drape themselves in his victim's blood and body parts.

Moving along, Baron Nefarious has begun an evil plot to take over the world. He intends to create a race of zombies, which for some reason seems to fit in with his bizarre nipple fetish. He begins by kidnapping 3 women "scientists" and converting them into the undead. Topless, green, hot pant wearing undead zombie chicks. And did I mention that these women are after some sort of fish monster themselves? Nefarious then decides to kidnap Violet after spotting her from some sort of closed circuit television system in his lair that's apparently been furnished by Spencer's Gifts. Once Violet has been swiped from Red during an afternoon picnic, Red dons a homemade superhero outfit (complete with human skin and dong) and begins his worldwide quest to rescue his love.

Red travels from the US to Sweden and back again. He winds up in a Rastafarian's bathroom in search of advice (narrowly escaping the leather clad woman playing Operation in the corner), there's a Newlywed Game/Hee Haw spoof, deformed nipples (again with the nipples?), abundant use of cheesy miniatures, terribly fun optical effects, a man in a rubber fish suit, unnecessary (but appreciated) full-frontal skinny dipping and more, oh so much more. Wait until you see how Red sneaks his way into the Baron's lair...don't worry; I won't spoil it for you. Did I mention the finale? Well, there are zombies, wolf-boys, robots and ummm, jeez, I know I'm forgetting something here...Very much like a comic book come to life.

Red's journey is long and arduous, but he's apparently up for the task. The question remains as to whether or not you are up for the task as well. Keep in mind, there's very little of substance to be found here, it's just goofy fun. Although I suppose something is to be said of the film's clever script and comedic timing. Maybe it's not as easy to pull something like this off, so I'd be willing to give some credit there. There are laughable moments in which you won't know why you're laughing. The flashback to Nefarious' childhood for starters. The weird Mexican wrestler segue, or just some of the general comedic exchanges between characters, which often prove to be pretty damn funny.

Then there are the performances. Like the jokes, they range from comedic genius to bottom of the barrel hack jobs. I will say that most, if not all of the major players perform their roles with an over the top abundance that works very well for the production. Tim Gerstmar as Red and Pippi Zornoza as Violet are fantastic in their leading roles, with a great sense of comic timing...as is Geoff Mosher as Nefarious. And let's not forget "One Man Band Rockabilly Legend Hasil Adkins" playing himself. Then there's the music. Die You Zombie Bastards is loaded to the gills with great music.

This is a pre release DVD, presented with as solid a full frame transfer as a film like this can offer. Audio is a bit off balance at times, with dialogue pretty low and overpowered by music and effects. I had to keep the remote handy to adjust. Extras included a trailer. Let's hope for a wide release soon, possibly with some extras about the cast, crew and production history...could prove quite interesting. It's obvious that a lot of love and care went into this production. It's fun, lighthearted and was obviously made by a group of individuals who care about their craft. And I enjoyed it a great deal for all of these reasons. Die You Zombie Bastards is exactly the kind of indie cinema we should be supporting.
