Over Easter weekend, I had some friends of mine up for the holiday. Late one night we popped in CinemaSky's Creepy Tales: Girls Night Out and silliness ensued. My friends just happen to be from Jersey and they knew some of the places in the stories. We had such a great time and ended up staying up far too late as the good Professor led us through a couple of stories filled with all sorts of things that go bump in the night.
In Girl's Night Out, two friends are heading out to a party. After endless outfit changes, they jump in the car and head down a long, dark, and deserted road through the woods. As they are driving along, they hear on the radio that and escaped mental patient is on the loose in their town. I have a feeling that's not the only trouble our girls are going to run into tonight. There's a whole host of creepy characters that are lining up to give the girls a night they'll never forget!
Our next story is a classic example of the high stress factor of the young office female. In The Creep, a very high strung lawyer is convinced that she's being stalked by an unassuming young man that always seems to turn up everywhere she goes. Could it be that she's a bit blinded by some past trauma or is the young man in question really a predator waiting to pounce?
In our last tale, Blood Moon Rising, a greedy woman discovers just how deep some disabilities go when she decides to try and take advantage of a well off widower in need of home nurse care. After she worms her way into his home and his heart and her name is safely on the will, she tries to make the rest of his life brief by denying him his medicine. She quickly learns the true nature of her charge's illness and finds the price for greed a little too high to handle.
Just a little while ago, I got to screen the 2001 release of Creepy Tales (review here) and it was really a great movie. This release was just as much fun (if not more so) and the stories where great. In plot lines that most people would find predictable, I saw a classic style. Of course the two girls get lost in the woods with a maniac on the loose. That's the way it always happens and we love it every time. You get a few friends and scream at the TV and poke fun at the characters. No matter how old I get, it's still one of my favorite ways to spend an evening.
The movie was filmed pretty well and there were some decent make up effects in there. This movie had a lot of heart and it shines through the lower budget and really makes it worth seeing. The DVD Special Features include: Audio Commentary, two videos by Mister Monster 'Gore Whore' and 'This Night I call (Bad Luck),' two videos by Jule Carey 'Little Did I Think' and 'He's a Diamond,' and a blooper reel.
While the movie was bad, it was the kind of bad that lover's of the horror genre (at least some of us) crave. It just goes to show that when it comes to B movies, the low budget is part of it's charm. You just wouldn't have the same kind of fun if it weren't for the lower budget. Sometimes all you need is a few good friends and a couple of story lines to keep you busy. Then next thing you know, your B movie selection turns into a really great evening.
