What you are about to read is an updated review of my Cheerleader Ninjas VHS review, to reflect the recent DVD release of Cheerleader Ninjas courtesy of Lions Gate Home Entertainment. I'd say that this review is about 85% recycled (and even that's being generous), deal with it.

If writer, producer, director, Kevin Campbell got just one thing right, it would have to be what every male's fantasy on this planet is (or should be); schoolgirls and cheerleaders. Cheerleader Ninjas is at times silly and quite often stupid. Easily comparable to Troma films in style and substance, it may never reach the heights of some of the "best in bad cinema", but for a first feature, Campbell is certainly heading in the right direction and Cheerleader Ninjas does indeed deliver the goods.

Plot? What plot? Well, there is a story in here, sort of. I'll do my best to sum it up briefly so I can get to the good stuff (that being cheerleaders and schoolgirls). It seems there is a group of bad guys who want to take over the world with their "Internet Domination Software". They want to turn people into zombies of some sort, but is that really important? Anyway, the evil doers enlist the help of evil schoolgirls to fend off the Happy Valley High Cheerleaders, who with the help of the "geeks" are trying to thwart the bad guy's plans. There's also some sort of right wing Christian group chasing everyone around as well (just like in real life!).

Cheerleader Ninjas is definitely a film made for fans of the so bad it's good school of thought. There are mountains of jokes thrown at you, rapid-fire style, and if one doesn't work, there is sure to be another following close behind that will. Oh yeah, and did I mention the cheerleaders? Basically we're given scene after scene of easy on the eyes lasses, running around in skimpy cheerleader/schoolgirl outfits. Every once in a while the cheerleaders and schoolgirls come face to face and a "battle" ensues. For the most part, the fight scenes are pure silliness, but the filmmakers make no apologies for any of this. Everyone in this production appears to be having a great time, and this enthusiasm really comes across to the viewer. Part of the success of Cheerleader Ninjas, is the fact that everyone involved knows they are indeed making camp.

Along with the cheerleaders and schoolgirls, you're also in store for a plethora of the following; fart, homosexual, ethnic jokes, costumed animal fighting, power ranger style giant robot fighting (complete with dildos) and more masturbating jokes than you can shake a stick at. Did I mention the fart jokes? I guess it goes without saying that the easily offended should definitely take another route. There's not really any excessive violence, but there is a fair share of nudity so all you perverted horn-dogs should leave satisfied. What doesn't work? Well, some of the jokes are just too juvenile. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, but it just means we've seen it all before and it really only caters to the lowest common denominator (I found myself saying a few times, "it would be cool if they had done this"). Some of the fight sequences are really bad, even for camp, and a few jokes are a bit overused. Still, there is quite a bit to like about Cheerleader Ninjas, and if you're patient, you should ultimately be rewarded. If Cheerleader Ninjas only downfall is that it's too campy, then the filmmakers have truly done their job. Special mention goes to the "Hamster Cam" for upskirt shots, truly genius!
