Director Robert Wise, best known to horror fans as the Director of, The Haunting, brings us a chilling tale about the possibilities of reincarnation.
Ivy Templeton (Susan Swift, who went on to star in Halloween : The Curse of Michael Meyers!) appears to be living the life of a normal, happy child. She has loving parents (Marsha Mason, John Beck), a nice home, and a dark secret that may alter her life forever. A mysterious stranger appears to be tracking Ivy's every move. He's outside of her school, follows her father, and even calls to see if she's OK when she's sick.
The stranger, Elliot Hoover (Anthony Hopkins), makes his way into the family's life. He claims to be the father of Ivy, who is actually his daughter, Audrey Rose, reincarnated. Audrey died in a car accident, minutes before Ivy was born. Of course Ivy's parents won't have anything to do with this, until they start to see the proof for themselves. Ivy has terrible nightmares, and wakes up screaming in pain, as if she isn't herself. Constantly running to the window, trying to claw her way out, as if she is trapped. It turns out Audrey Rose, was burnt alive in a car wreck, and had herself, tried to claw her way out of the car for a good several minutes, before being consumed by the flames. Sometimes the only way Ivy can be calmed down, is by Mr. Hoover himself, who seems to show up at just the right time. Even at this point we've only begun to scratch the surface.
Audrey Rose is presented in its original 1.85:1 ratio, in a non-anamorphic transfer. The picture is outstanding for a film from the late 70's. There is some slight grain in some scenes, but nothing to be concerned about. The print used was in wonderful condition, no specs or scratches and colors are stable.
The sound is Dolby digital mono, and it sounds great. There is absolutely no distortion, and dialogue is crisp and clear. The sounds of Ivy screaming are unnerving, and they seem to go on forever, you have been warned.
Extras are slim, but that's to be expected. We are treated to a theatrical trailer, which is more like a teaser and that's it. This is not a big deal considering the $14.98 price point. This title can be found online and in local stores for under $10.00
This was my first time seeing Audrey Rose, and I must say that I was pleasantly surprised. The presentation by MGM is practically flawless. Audrey Rose, is a chilling tale, which deserves a spot on every horror fans DVD shelf.
