Having taken in 21 films (22 if you count the fact that we saw Survive Style
5+ twice) and having written 20 solid reviews between the two of us, I'd say
that this years' Philly Film Fest was a rousing success. There was plenty to
choose from, and choose we certainly did (although sometimes, not too wisely
*cough* Cutie Honey *cough*). We saw some good (One Missed Call), some bad
(The Holy Girl) and some ugly (Throw Down), but through it all, had a great
time and ultimately wound up having a hell of a few weeks in the cinema. I'm
proud to announce my top 5 picks of the 14th Philadelphia Film Festival.
5. Ferpect Crime
Alex de la Iglesia provided us with the 'ferpect' opening
night film. Attracting an eclectic audience and 3 sellouts, Ferpect Crime is
as wild a ride as Iglesia has ever concocted. While the film may not be as 'in
your face' as some of his earlier work, it's no less erratic or exceptional.
4. Mysterious Skin
One of the many 'children in peril' themed flicks this
year, you wouldn't expect so many to stand out, but alas, 3 of them made it on
my top 5 list. While Mysterious Skin may have come across a bit too bold
and/or honest at times, it's a disturbing effort that's as creepy as it is
tender. Thoroughly entertaining.
3. The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things
Not just another 'children in
peril' themed film, Asia Argento's adaptation of J.T. LeRoy's short stories
packs a powerful and entertaining punch. After sitting through the dreadful
Scarlet Diva, it's nice to see that Asia could possibly be as talented a
filmmaker as her father, Dario. Bravo Asia.
2. Palindromes
The third 'children in peril' film to make it on my Top 5
List is also my second favorite film of the Fest. Some will get it, and some
will not, but that's OK, because it isn't a film for everyone. Todd Solondz's
brave story of a young girl on a quest for a child of her own and some
understanding (as told by a slew of different actresses) is essentially a
gimmick film that does not rely on its gimmick for success. Solondz fans
rejoice, because he's returned to his roots.
1. Survive Style 5+
Easily the most enjoyable film of the Festival this
year, Survive Style 5+ just continues to grow on you after each consecutive
viewing. It's just as deep as it is flashy (although you would never suspect
this at first). While it borrows from some familiar filmic plot conventions
we've seen many times over, its unique spin, style and plethora of incredibly
entertaining over the top performances make it a real winner.
