Lawrence

In theory, the indie 'adult orientated' body-switching film X,Y has an interesting premise...in theory. But then I go and remember how much I truly despise body-switching movies to begin with. This could easily be the reason why I found myself to be extremely frustrated and bored with X,Y and perhaps it can also explain why a 90-minute film felt like 990-minutes.

18 Again, Freaky Friday, Like Father Like Son, Prelude to a Kiss, Dream A Little Dream (the most tolerable because of the films' many Corey's) Hot Chick, Vice Versa - these are all terrible examples of body switching movies, and I don't really like any of them. In an attempt to take the whole body-switching sub genre to a new level, Vladimir Vitkin's X,Y is a smarter more artistic affair, but that doesn't mean that I have to like it anymore than these other films, and I didn't.

One night while shaking her moneymaker at the local strip club, a loud siren knocks Frankie (Melissa Murphy) right on her ass, along with one of the club's patrons. It isn't too long before both Frankie and her monotone boyfriend Terry (Jamie Harrold) realize that Frankie is now a man trapped in a woman's body (for one reason or another, go figure). The real drama comes into play however, when Frankie realizes that no magic spell (as is the case in many of these other body-switching films) will allow her to return to her former self, so she's forced to adjust. And adjust she does, by taking on a dominant role in her relationship with Terry and randomly piercing charms to his chest until the end credits roll...makes sense to me!

I'm not ragging on the film because it's weird or unconventional, quite the contrary. I respect the fact that X,Y tries to take this puke-infested sub genre to another level, but in the end, it just didn't work for me. Weird for the sake of weird just doesn't cut the trans-gender mustard. It's not all complaints though, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the 'easy on the eyes' Melissa Murphy spends nearly the first 45-minutes of the film topless, you go girl!

In the end, X,Y is a slick looking digital video indie flick, with absolutely nothing to offer its viewer, other than a little bit of style, absolutely no substance. When I left the theatre I was angry, but upon reflection, I can see where people could find value here (poor misguided souls), unfortunately it just wasn't for me.

Thumbs Down X,Why?
