Lawrence

Princess Blade is a tale of vengeance, betrayal, friendship, and isolation, all familiar to the samurai sub-genre (set in the future this time, which is a nice change of pace). The film itself isn't really telling us anything new as far as its storyline is concerned. Style and execution are the standouts here, and when it's done right, it makes a world of a difference. Yuki (the completely adorable Yumiko Shaku) is one member in a house of an elite group of Samurai assassins. Yuki learns of the true fate of her parents years earlier, and that her mother was betrayed and murdered by a fellow Samurai. Yuki confronts him (in a wicked battle scene), and flees finding comfort in the home of Takashi. Takashi is a loner rebel with secrets of his own and the two learn to take comfort from one another. Takashi lives with his traumatized sister, and the three of them form a delicate bond. To say anymore would be a crime against nature, so I will stop right there.

Princess Blade is truly a fun ride, and is the standout film of the festival so far. The film excels in just about every department (you really root for the good guys, and absolutely loathe the bad guys). The performances are top notch along with the dead on target writing and characterization. There is nothing tongue-in-cheek about this film (although the fan-boys in the theatre found many scenes to be hilarious, why? I have no idea). The film is played straight from the start, and this unique element is one of the reasons why this film works so well. The action scenes are nothing short of astounding (I was afraid I'd miss something if I blinked) and the film has a unique style all it's own. The fight choreography is extremely well done, with some really cool surprises thrown in. There's no shortage of the red stuff either so even gore-hounds should be pleasantly surprised. Special mention also goes out to the score which incorporates vintage Samurai soundtracks with a unique modern spin. Princess Blade incorporates elements of the genre from the 60's thru modern times and the end result is quite amazing.

Not only is Princess Blade one of the Best of the Fest so far (in my book at least), it's one of the best action movies I've seen in quite some time. If you have the means, this is one that is NOT to be missed.

Thumbs up! Way, Way, Way, Up!!
