Takashi Miike's (Audition, Dead or Alive series) horror-comedy-musical-hybrid, is nothing short of miraculous. The Katakuris, (a seemingly "happy" family) are in high hopes that a new road will bring much success to their small bed and breakfast type Inn. When guests start to arrive, they no sooner die. Whether it's unexpected suicide or death by sumo wrestler, the Katakuris are left with the task of disposing of the bodies, quickly and quietly. Of course notifying the authorities would only bring unwanted attention to the Inn. What's the final element that The Katakuri's decide to bring to the table when getting the job done? Why, breaking into song of course. With a multitude of musical number, off the wall Claymation sequences, and a zombie chorus line, the Katakuris is guaranteed to be unlike any movie you have ever seen. Everything is over the top, from the over-exagerrated performances to the bizarre lsd inspired claymation sequences. Would we expect anything less from Miike?
I don't want to give too much away for that would be a crime. Part of the fun is not knowing what kind of insanity Miike will dish up next. Highly inventive and entertaining, The Katakuris once again proves that Takashi Miike is one of the most talented and inventive filmmakers of our time. If you have a great sense of humor, and enjoy a double dose of the absurd, you should have a blast.
Thumbs up.
