Where should one begin when discussing the multi-genre stew of a film that is Guardian of the Frontier AKA Varuh Meje. If you take equal parts chick flick, 80's horror film, fairy tale, Twilight Zone episode, and add just a dash of David Lynch, you may have an idea of what you're in store for. With so much going on (and a huge emphasis on "girl power!" and female bonding issues) I never would've thought that this would be a film that I would be able to take to. Alas, imagine my surprise when I found myself to be completely engrossed in its absurdity.
Three young (and VERY attractive) female college students living on the edge of Slovenia, (a hop skip and a jump away from Croatia) decide to take a holiday together. They plan a canoe/camping trip that turns out to be anything but relaxing, or does it? Along the way they meet some interesting characters, indulge in the first topless lesbian canoe ride, all the while they're possibly being stalked (by someone, or something). The emphasis on female bonding is key here, and unfortunately I'm not to keen on the whole female bonding thing. However, it's the wackiness that constantly surrounds these eclectic characters that kept me interested, as each scenario became crazier than the last. Plus, all of this topless behavior doesn't hurt either. We'll start with the aforementioned topless canoe ride, which was pretty cool. Then you've got your topless sunbathing along with your topless (and sometimes bottomless) washing in the stream (which is pretty neat as well). Then you've got your topless water-fights and finally hot sweaty lesbian action (topless or not, that's some cool shit).
All kidding aside, Guardian of the Frontier gives the viewer a unique perspective on all of its subject matter. The cultural barriers may be hard for some to cross as cultural differences and political agendas take the forefront at times. If you can get past all of this and accept the story and situations at face value, you're sure to pull something positive out of the film. I've never really seen anything quite like Guardians of the Frontier, and after experiencing it the other night, I'm sure I'll never see anything quite like it again.
Thumbs up.
